The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont. It is based on the 1982 Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne, who is sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Tim Robbins. A man named Red (Morgan Freeman) approaches Andy at Shawshank Prison to offer him work in exchange for contraband items with which he can make money. Andy is initially reluctant but eventually agrees and begins smuggling contraband inside the prison walls. Andy hears about an inmate, Tommy (Gil Bellows), who has a cache of hidden money and decides to find it. He gets a job working for the warden (Bob Gunton) as an aide, and convinces Tommy to share his secret for roasting beetles (turning them into canthaxanthin). He gets Tommy to give up the location of his money, but Andy then smuggles it out of Shawshank by hiding it in the body of a dead prisoner. At the same time, he also manages to bribe an officer to transfer him into a better cell, where his status as a fly man enables him to obtain access to the yard. After being released from prison, Andy celebrates by visiting Rita (Meryl Streep), his girlfriend before his arrest who has gone on with her life without him. Andy spirals down into alcoholism after Rita's husband informs her that she is pregnant with Andy's child. Andy's alcoholism leads to his reassignment as a clerk, leaving him jobless and penniless; he then learns that his savings were used up by the state. He then makes a drunken phone call to a friend for money. Andy is then put on trial and sent to another prison when it's revealed that he is in debt with the state, despite the fact that he already paid off his debt with his inheritance. His new prison is much harsher than Shawshank: the officers are more violent and abusive, food supplies are scarce, and prisoners routinely suffer from tuberculosis. Andy tries to keep himself busy in prison by creating intricate sculptures out of discarded materials and playing chess with his neighbor, Ellis "Red" Redding (James Whitmore). Red tells Andy about an underground smuggling operation that moves money and contraband within the walls of prisons in exchange for a hefty fee. Andy decides to use this opportunity to raise funds for his escape. Andy receives a lucky coin which his girlfriend's son, Dufresne, gave him, before the boy died in a car accident. He uses it in an illegal poker game run by the warden along with the prison guards. Andy befriends Tommy after being attacked by another inmate, "Wild Bill" Wharton (Clancy Brown). Red convinces the guards that Tommy tried to escape so he is beaten and sentenced to solitary confinement in "the hole". To gain Red's trust, Andy throws a game of poker against an officer named Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown) who is also one of the jailors of the hole. cfa1e77820
